About the Network

European Network on Migration and Development
EunomadEuropean network of specialized organizations, EUNOMAD highlights the positive role of migrants in the social, economic, political and cultural development of european societies and origin countries. Its objective is to promote the recognition of civic expressions of migrants as actors of development here and there.

Who we are?

Eleven NGOs from 9 European countries have taken the initiative to consult on the migration-development relationship. They agree on the lack of transparency and recognition of co-development actions both in the host countries in the North, and in the countries of origin in the South.
In order to improve the practices of co-development and enhance their impact, the creation and animation of an European network appeared necessary. The network brings together European stakeholders (NGOs, associations of migrants, local authorities, research institutes ...) working on the relationship between migration and development.

Our political vision

  • Recognize migrants as development actors here and there

Eunomad affirms that migration represents a valuable resource for countries of origin and residence alike. Migrants, through individual and collective transfers of funds, have considerably
improved the living conditions of family members in origin countries. Through their activities in countries of residence, migrants contribute to the economies of European countries.
As the force behind many local initiatives, migrants have built new channels of active solidarity between the North and the South. They have become effective partners with local authorities, particularly in Europe, where they help to fight discrimination and promote social cohesion.

Migrants’ perspectives, expertise and experience must be heard, recognised and appreciated.

  • Promote migrants' active citizenship

EUNOMAD network highlights the positive role of migrants in the development of societies of origin and residence societies.

The migration/development nexus has become one of the major issues at stake in relations between European countries and migrants’ origin countries.
European societies are currently unaware of the positive impact that migration has on development. National and European policies focus on managing the flow of migration, at the expense of recognition for the positive, citizenship-building interactions occurring in both societies of origin and residence.
In order to build upon the positive impact of human mobility, European stakeholders – migrants’ associations, NGOs, local authorities, research centres, etc. – decided to form and coordinate a European network on migration and development: eunomad.

Objectives

Eunomad’s goal is to develop an European network of civil society organisations which work relates to the migration-development nexus.

Eunomad seeks to:
  • enhance its members’ guidance activities in the field of migration and development
  • develop lobbying efforts to gain public policy support for the migration/development nexus and its benefits for migrants as well as origin and European societies.
The network develops several types of activities:
  • Coordination. Developing a flexible and a dynamic network of exchanges between organisations working towards the migration/development nexus.
  • Capitalisation. Encouraging the evaluation of practices, reports and capitalisation between member organisations.
  • Study. Analyzing relevant policies and their impacts on the practices of the migration/development nexus in Europe.
  • Lobbying. Elaborate recommendations for decision-makers in the EU member states and in the migrants’ origin countries, as well for international organisations such as the Council of Europe, the United Nations and in particular the European Union.

The Eunomad network is thus at once:
> A centre for the capitalisation of best practices of its members,
> A forum for sharing experiences where partners evaluate each other’s work and pool resources such as tools and methods,
> A laboratory for practical experiences to encourage innovation in the migration/development nexus.

Operation and Governance

The network is governed by a policy of participatory democracy:
  • At the European level, eunomad is managed by an Executive Board comprised of representatives elected by the national platforms. The board members are nominated for a renewable period of three years. The Executive Board administrates the network in consultation with the national platforms.
  • At the national level, eunomad is organised in national platforms. They comprise various stakeholders working in the field of migration and development. Each national platform appoints a board for its own administration.
